Steve Midgett of Steve Midgett Mokume in Franklin, NC is a 1999 NICHE award winner for his piece entitled Mokume Diamond Wedding Band. The band features a swirling mokume pattern in 18K white gold and sterling silver with small flush set diamonds scattered around the band. Steve is an internationally recognized authority on mokume and is currently working on a revised and expanded edition of his book on the technique of mokume gane.
Founded in 1990, the NICHE Awards program recognizes the outstanding creative achievements of American craft artists who produce work for craft galleries and retail stores. Judging criteria are based on three main distinctions:
From over 1,100 entries submitted by some of the nation's most brilliant
and innovative artists in every media, only 41 artists were presented with NICHE awards.
The awards are sponsored by NICHE, the exclusive trade publication for progressive
retailers of American crafts.
